It’s been revealed the cyberattack on financial firm Latitude is far worse than initially reported by the company.

As many as 14 million people may have had their data stolen in the major hack. The company has now revealed approximately 7.9 million Australians and New Zealand driver’s licence numbers were stolen, and another 6.1 million records dating back to 2005 were also obtained by hackers.

Professor of cybercrime at the school of computer science and engineering at UNSW, Professor Richard Buckland, says it’s “far worse in terms of both the number of people affected … and far worse too in the nature of the information”.

Latitude offers credit cards, loans and finance to customers of companies including Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys.
