THE TUNNEL TO TOWERS FOUNDATION IS BUILDING A 64 UNIT APARTMENT COMPLEX AND 21 BEDROOM HOMES ON THE FORMER PHOENIX STEEL MILL SITE, JUST SOUTH OF THE PENNDOT BUILDING THERE. ONCE COMPLETED, THE VETERANS VILLAGE WILL HOUSE MORE THAN 80 VETERANS. SERVICES WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE GET BACK ON THEIR FEET. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO RECEIVE WHATEVER HELP THEY NEED. A new housing complex for veterans in need of permanent housing is coming to Harrisburg. The 64-unit apartment complex will also include 20 single-bedroom homes. The complex, known as Veterans Village, will be built on the site of the former Phoenix Steel Mill site on the 1100 block of South Front Street. It will house more than 80 veterans. Those veterans will also have access to on-site support services, like job training, mental health support, benefits assistance, and addiction treatment. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is a nonprofit that supports first responders, Gold Star families, and military veterans is behind the project. The group says its goal is to eradicate veteran homelessness.“No veteran should be homeless,” said Frank Siller, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation chairman and CEO. Since 2023, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation says it's helped more than 6,500 veterans find homes across the country, including in Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, New York, Florida, Nevada, South Carolina, Michigan, and Colorado. The group says it also helps provide mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children. It also offers specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.The groundbreaking was at 11 a.m. Thursday.
