U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to pursue the capital punishment against the alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione.

"Luigi Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson - an innocent man and father of two young children - was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," asserted Bondi in a press release. "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again."

The Associated Press disclosed that 26 year old Magione is facing federal allegations which include a charge of murder by use of a firearm, a count that can result in the death penalty.

Despite pleading not guilty to several charges of murder, including one count characterized as an act of terrorism related to the December 4 assassination of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson near a hotel in midtown Manhattan in 2024, Mangione faces potential death penalty under federal law.

The incident, whose footage swiftly went viral on social media platforms, appeared to be a meticulously calculated hit, reports the Irish Star. While the maximum sentence for state offenses would be life imprisonment, Mangione has eschewed guilty pleas in both state and federal courts regarding his indictment.

Spondylolisthesis, a condition that Mangione suffers from, happens when one vertebra slips over another, potentially causing intense pain if it compresses the spinal nerves. This condition can develop during childhood or result from an injury. In Mangione's case, it was caused by a surfing accident.

It's believed that this injury profoundly affected the young man, with several social media posts suggesting as much.
