ALERT: Why this month is the 'riskiest' for dogs amid five death hazards
Pet owners have been warned that April is the riskiest month of the year for Ireland’s pets.
Allianz Ireland has reminded pet owners nationwide to realise the financial implications of what happens should their beloved pets become ill or injured - something that is riskier this month than any other.
Vet Fionnuala Fallon delivered advice on five hazards that could seriously injure or even kill your beloved pet in April.
Pesky Parasites: Pet owners need to be on high alert for bugs like bees, ticks, and fleas, which can cause pets discomfort and transmit multiple diseases.
Easter: Many people celebrate Easter in April with chocolates and flowers - both of which can be dangerous for animals! Lilies are toxic and can be fatal to certain animals like cats, and chocolate ingestion can cause vomiting and even seizures.
Plant Protection: Pet owners should be wary of ALL plants with stings, thorns or sharp edges and exercise extreme caution when exploring unfamiliar areas with their pets in spring.
Outdoor Hazards: As people spend more time outdoors in April, pets may be more likely to encounter dangers like traffic or aggressive animals off-lead.
Allergies: April and May mean an increase in pollen, mould, and other allergens that can cause respiratory issues or skin irritation in pets.

Allinaz shared the tips above as they introduced The Allianz Pet Project, an innovative new campaign from Allianz Ireland highlighting the importance of pet insurance in safeguarding Ireland’s pets and alleviating financial stress for owners.
Data collected as part of the campaign reveals that more than a fifth (21.5%) of pet insurance claims in Ireland exceed €750, with 15% surpassing €1,000 - The Allianz Pet Project aims to put these statistics into perspective for pet owners around Ireland.
Tapping into the insight that many pet owners who don’t have pet insurance turn to crowdfunding to cover life-saving veterinary care, The Allianz Pet Project was created to highlight the relief and reassurance felt by pet owners who have Allianz Pet Insurance when their pets require urgent medical care.
So one night, Allianz took to GoFundMe, identifying pet owners raising funds to cover their pet’s healthcare, and completed the total target of each chosen fundraiser's goal helping pets across Ireland receive the life-saving treatment. Allianz Ireland is urging pet owners nationwide to take proactive steps to protect their beloved pets and avoid unexpected financial burdens.
Paddy Comyn, Corporate Communications Specialist at Allianz Ireland, commented: “Although our pets mean the world to us, many pet owners don’t fully realise the potential cost of veterinary care until faced with a hefty bill. Through The Allianz Pet Project, we wanted to raise awareness of this issue — showing pet owners the value of pet insurance, preventing unnecessary financial stress, and ultimately providing peace of mind.”
Further data from the campaign has identified April as the peak month for pet-related claims, making it the most hazardous time of the year for Ireland’s beloved companions. In light of this, Allianz has partnered with veterinarian Fionnuala Fallon, who has shared her expert advice and essential tips to help pet owners protect their furry friends throughout April and beyond.
Commenting on this finding, Fionnuala Fallon, Veterinarian at Park Pets Veterinary Clinic, Kinnegad says, “April typically is when we see a significant change in the weather. While seasonal changes bring plenty of outdoor activities and quality time with our pets, they also present some unique hazards that pet owners need to be aware and mindful of.”
