Anna Cockhill has already etched her name in the program’s record books, setting a new stolen base record, as a freshman.

MISSOULA, MONT. — The University of Montana Grizzlies softball team kicked off their conference play last week in Greeley, Colorado. However, it’s a standout freshman who has been making waves even before the start of Big Sky competition.

Anna Cockhill, a Helena Capital High School product, has already etched her name in the program’s record books, setting a new stolen base record — and she’s only a freshman.

Cockhill, who led the Class AA with 27 stolen bases during her senior season at Capital and helped guide her team to a state title, hasn’t slowed down since arriving in Missoula. In fact, she’s taken her speed and competitiveness to a whole new level.

“I’ve always had a mindset that when I get on first, my goal is to get to second,” Cockhill said. She expressed her excitement when she broke the record, sharing, “It was such a great feeling, especially with the excitement from my teammates in the dugout.”

Grizzlies head coach Stef Ewing recognized Cockhill's talent early on. “I watched her play last summer and I knew we had an incredibly talented kid on our hands,” Ewing said. Cockhill has now surpassed the previous record of 18 stolen bases, setting a new benchmark with 19.

Ewing added, “She’s got the green light to go whenever she wants, and she trusts her speed and her ability. She’s just fearless out there.”

For Cockhill, it’s never been about the recognition; it’s about the journey — the constant grind to get better. Her focus remains on her team’s success, helping the Grizzlies reach new heights both on and off the field.

“Stealing bases is part of my game, and it’s a huge factor in our team’s run production,” Cockhill said.

Ewing believes Cockhill's potential is vast. “I believe she could go down as one of the greatest that's ever played here. She’s only halfway through her freshman season, and there’s no reason why she couldn’t end up with 30 or 35 stolen bases this year,” Ewing stated.

The Grizzlies, with Cockhill's contributions, aim for a Big Sky Championship, a goal they haven't achieved since 2017. As Cockhill continues to excel, the Grizzlies are hopeful for a strong season ahead.
