Update:

The European Commission have issued a warning to citizens that says they should stockpile 72 hours worth of supplies in their home in case of emergencies.

A new EU Preparedness Union Strategy was revealed on Wednesday that looks to reduce to fallout from things such as natural disasters, cyber attacks and geopolitical crises, including the possibility of armed aggression against EU countries: “the European Union is facing increasingly complex crises and challenges that cannot be ignored” a statement said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen justified the decision to make the announcement by explaining that “new realities require a new level of preparedness in Europe. Our citizens, our Member States, and our businesses need the right tools to act both to prevent crises and to react swiftly when a disaster hits. Families living in flood zones should know what to do when the waters rise. Early warning systems can prevent regions hit by wildfires from losing precious time. Europe stands ready to support Member States and trusted partners in the neighbourhood to save lives and livelihoods.”

What is inside the EU 72-hour survival kit?

The proposed pack includes things such as water, medicines, batteries, and food to survive for at least 72 hours without external assistance.

EU 72-hour recommended survival kit:

  • Glasses
  • Documents in a sealed, waterproof bag
  • Swiss army knife
  • Water
  • Food
  • Matches/lighter/flashlight
  • Medication
  • Cash
  • Chargers/power bank
  • Radio
  • Playing cards

Hadja Lahbib, the European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, who stars in the video above, noted that concerns vary across the bloc but emphasised the importance of all citizens taking steps to be ready for emergencies. “Today, the EU launches its new #Preparedness Strategy. “Ready for anything” — this must be our new European way of life. Our motto and #hashtag“ she wrote on X.
