Junction City Fire Department to begin fire hydrant testing
JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) - The Junction City Fire Department will continue fire hydrant testing on Monday, March 31, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Hydrants will be tested to ensure they’re operable and able to produce the required water pressure for firefighting purposes.
Testing must be done during normal operating hours, however, it’s impossible to know in advance where or when the testing will take place in any specific area.
Opening hydrants may cause a temporary discoloration of water in nearby homes; the discoloration is not harmful in any way and can be cleared by running the water for a few minutes.
The testing not only ensures the protection of residents, but it’s also an evaluation indicator used by the Insurance Services Organization (ISO), which rates cities according to the fire protection they offer.
The recent Insurance Services Organization rating resulted in the improvement of the City of Junction City to a Class 3 from a Class 4 protection rating, and by conducting periodic maintenance on the City’s fire protection assets, it can potentially be improved again.
The following areas are where this year’s testing of hydrants will be:
- 1st concentration – Zone 211; 300 block of W. 7th to I-70 and Madison to Reynolds
- 2nd concentration – Zone 208; Buffalo Solider Dr. to 8th St. and Madison to Grant Ave.
- 3rd concentration – Zone 204; Grant Ave. to Fort Riley Gate
Maintenance and testing will be completed by June.
