The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility has recorded over 120,000 recreation visits over the first half of the spring 2025 semester following its Jan. 13 opening, including 3,813 unique users on opening day. The trend has led to significant increases in student and campus community access for each of the units in which it houses.
The 120,000 visitors represent nearly half of what Marquette’s recreation facilities reported for all of 2024 (about 256,000). The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility is averaging 2,521 recreation visits per weekday over its first two months.
“We are thrilled by how well our new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility has been received by our students and community,” said Chief Wellness Officer Luis de Zengotita. “All the credit goes to our incredible clinicians, educators and professional staff whose dedication to our students makes our success possible. This is only the beginning. We will continue expanding our care, support, and partnerships so that every student knows Marquette is here for their wellness every step of the way.”

Visits across the facility and its units are up across the board:
- The Marquette University Medical Clinic and the Counseling Center have had nearly 3,900 total visits in the first two months of the semester, serving almost 2,000 unique students.
- The Counseling Center also reports its highest event engagement in five years with 1,714 students attending 93 events.
- Student Wellness and Health Promotion hosted 13 wellness events with 492 participants, while 1,603 students have received online Bringing in the Bystander training.
- Student Wellness and Health Promotion’s Out of the Darkness fundraiser raised nearly $2,000 with 64 registrants over six teams. The event will be Saturday, April 5, with registration at 11 a.m. and a walk at 12:30 p.m. There is still time to register here!
- Campus Recreation has seen a dramatic increase in intramural and club sports participation with 216 teams and 1,604 athletes. This is an increase from 128 teams and 1,120 athletes the year prior.
- Campus Recreation also reported dramatically increased participation in its fitness classes, with spin classes growing from about 1,600 participants to 2,400. Over 2,000 people have participated in group fitness classes, more than a fivefold increase (392).

Marquette opened its new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility, a 195,000-square-foot re-imagining of health, wellness, and recreation services on campus, on Jan. 13, the first day of the 2025 spring semester. It is home to Campus Recreation, the Marquette University Medical Clinic, the Center for Student Wellness and Health Promotion, and the Counseling Center, for the first time bringing these areas from varied corners of campus into one place, allowing Marquette to comprehensively serve students’ well-being.
