MCLEAN COUNTY (25News Now)-The McLean County Lift the Ban Coalition wants state lawmakers to eliminate the rent control ban in Illinois, through HB3687.

On Saturday, activists went door-to-door near Illinois State University in Normal, hoping to win support among students living in off-campus housing.

The cost to rent off-campus is out of control, coalition members said.

“People can’t afford it. Wages are not keeping up with people’s ability to afford housing, food, and medicine,” said event organizer Sonny Garcia. “This is a key issue in the community, and we’re here to organize renters to make sure they have what they need to be housed.”

Garcia also said the goal of this movement is for young renters to know what steps they need to take to convince state lawmakers they need to pass the legislation.
