One resident of Retford affected by flooding has spoken to Environment Secretary Therese Coffey who was visiting the Nottinghamshire town today.

During a tense exchange, she told the Secretary of State: 'It's not a home anymore, it's just a shell.'

Storm Babet victim John Gillan, 56, from Arbroath, was killed when a tree struck his van on the B9127 at Whigstreet near Forfar last Thursday.

Police Scotland received a report of the 'one vehicle crash' at about 5pm that day, with emergency services attending - but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released this afternoon, his family said: 'We are devastated by the loss of John and the circumstances in which he died. John was a loving husband to Gaynor, dad to Marc, father-in-law to Natasha, and grandad to Reygan and Finley.

'He was also a loving son to John and Moira, brother to Wendy and a loving uncle, son-in-law and brother-in-law. John will be deeply missed by us all.

'Thank you to family and friends for supporting us through this indescribably difficult time. We'd like to request that our privacy be respected whilst we grieve for John.'

Police Scotland have just named a man who died when a tree struck his van near Forfar last Thursday during Storm Babet as John Gillan, 56, from Arbroath.

Retford in Nottinghamshire has been one of the worst-affected parts of England by the flooding in recent days.

Flooding is also causing chaos in the Republic of Ireland this afternoon.

The Museum of Making in Derby suffered 'substantial flood damage' following Storm Babet and has been closed to the public:

A little girl and her mother helped save about 200 starfish who had been washed up onto a beach in Lincolnshire during Storm Babet.

Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue said its volunteers were also involved in the effort, which transferred the starfish into rock pools or deep puddles.

Earlier on today, photographer Ken Jack captured these impressive images of the Forth Bridge in Scotland appearing out of a bank of mist above a calm sea.

It may take 'several months' for some people to move back into their homes after flooding caused by Storm Babet, Environment Secretary Therese Coffey said during a visit to Retford, Nottinghamshire.

Asked if she thinks the flood defences are sufficient, she said: 'Well, I'm not a floods engineer, so I have to go on what the Environment Agency is determining in different parts of the country, but that's part of the reason for the conversations with the chief executive who's elsewhere in Nottinghamshire today.'

Asked about compensation, she said: 'One of the things that the Government has done was established something called Flood Re, it's an insurance scheme that makes sure everybody in this country can get their homes, their houses protected, regardless of what flooding has happened there.

'So that's been a significant change that only came in about eight years ago. We will continue to make sure that's the case, that people can insure their homes in the future.'

First Minister Humza Yousaf has said there will be a 'long road to recovery' for those impacted by Storm Babet.

He has tweeted some pictures from his visit to Brechin today, saying that the Scottish Government 'stands ready to provide support':

James Davies, Conservative MP for the Vale of Clwyd in Wales, has just tweeted pictures of flooding in Dyserth, Rhyl and St Asaph:

Environment Secretary Therese Coffey has said residents in flood-hit Retford in Nottinghamshire were asking 'why stuff hasn't happened' since the last major floods in 2007.

During a visit to the area this afternoon, she told Sky News: 'In that time, between 2015 and 2021 we've invested £2.6billion in flood defences right across the country, that was over 300,000 homes. We're partway through a programme of spending a further £5.2billion over a six-year time period.'

Ms Coffey said she thought it was 'important to come and see people whose lives have been disrupted'.

She added: 'Now I'm conscious of that with my own constituency, and of course the people who have lost their life and their friends and family will be very distressed too, but it's about coming and seeing what practical things we can try and get done quickly to help these communities. And that's part of the action that I'll be understanding and trying to take away today.'

We've just been sent some photographs of the shocking flood damage caused to Kim Clark's home in Brechin, Angus.

Ms Clark, who was visited by First Minister Humza Yousaf earlier today, was also pictured in the garden with her partner Paul Fowlie and daughter Isla.

Toolstation has told MailOnline that sales of dirty water pumps have seen an increase by 139 per cent week-on-week amid the flooding caused by Storm Babet.

Meanwhile sales of dehumidifiers have increased by 41 per cent week-on-week.

The firm added that the storm is also expected to lead to a surge in sales of hoses and pressure washers.

Residents in the flood-hit village of Catcliffe near Rotherham in South Yorkshire are cleaning up today after their properties were deluged during Storm Babet.

The Met Office has just released a map showing which parts of Wales are covered by the yellow warning for rain, which will run from 5pm this afternoon until midnight.

Forecasters are warning that a 'band of heavy showers is likely to cause some localised flooding' in the Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire areas.

Here is what the Met Office has said people in those areas should expect:

• Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
• Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
• Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible
• Some interruption to power supplies and other services is possible

The Met Office has just imposed a new yellow warning for rain in Wales, running from 5pm this afternoon until midnight tonight. More to follow.

Aberdeenshire Council has revealed a gritter driver was injured while treating a road today when he hit a patch of iced floodwater at Hatton of Fintray and overturned.

The local authority said: 'We understand that he has suffered some bruising and was understandably shaken up but thankfully has not suffered any serious injury.'

The Canal & River Trust has confirmed that 'hundreds of trees' have been blown down by Storm Babet, and the canal network has suffered 'structural damage, including towpaths washed away, a landslide, and over 50 metres of bank that's collapsed'. The organisation has issued a lengthy update on X this afternoon:

First Minister Humza Yousaf has said he will have conversations with the UK Government about funding if required.

Speaking during a visit to Brechin, Angus, where the storm hit hardest, with the River South Esk bursting its banks and flooding dozens of homes, Mr Yousaf said the local council would receive the funding its needs to recover.

Asked about requesting funding from the UK Government, the First Minister later told journalists: 'We haven't got to that stage yet.

'I think it's important that the assessments are done in terms of the scale of devastation, what the impacts will be and what funding is required.

'Then, of course, if necessary, we'll have those conversations with the UK Government.'

He added: 'I'm very keen to give an assurance to residents here that I've spoken to, to businesses here that I've spoken to, the Government is there to support them as much as we can during the long road to recovery.'

Unsettled weather will continue this week but it will be 'nowhere near as impactful as last week', Nicky Maxey, a spokesperson for the Met Office said today.

She said: 'On Monday northern areas will be mostly dry with sunny spells, there will be showers in the South West and Northern Ireland, and heavy rain on the Isles of Scilly.'

Tomorrow will be mainly dry but there will be outbreaks of rain which will push northwards through the day, although the North West will probably stay dry, the forecaster added.

The Met Office has said Waterside Perth saw a provisional total of 203.6mm (8in) of rain fall between midnight on Thursday and 6pm on Saturday.

It added that Invermark saw a provisional 178.2mm and Charr in Kincardineshire had 183.6mm.

The average October rainfall in Angus for October is 124.79mm and it is 115.57mm in Kincardineshire.

Anna Calder, spokeswoman for the Environment Agency, has said significant river flooding impacts will continue for parts of the Midlands until Friday.

She added that minor impacts will be continuing in parts of the Midlands and the North East of England until Wednesday.

Significant river flooding is also possible but not expected in parts of England tomorrow and on Wednesday, with minor impacts possible more widely, due to further heavy rainfall falling on sensitive catchments.

Asked if flood defences were adequate, Ms Calder said the Environment Agency has been 'working around the clock with its partners to help reduce this risk'.

She added: 'We've put barriers up to help protect communities as well as employing pumps in key locations.'

The Met Office has revealed a total of 13 areas broke their daily rainfall records for October last week.

These included sites in Suffolk, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Wiltshire, Derbyshire, Kincardineshire, North Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Northumberland & Humberside.

Members of a town in Derbyshire have rallied around a group of elderly residents whose homes were severely damaged by recent floods during Storm Babet.

Many of the residents of the 10 Alms Cottages in Ashbourne have been staying with relatives after flood water 'quickly' entered their homes, destroying furniture inside.

Ben Sellers, who is local to the area, said residents were taken to safety by the fire and rescue team on the Friday afternoon.

When the water dropped, on the Saturday morning, he and his friend Mark Harrison, 60, went to remove damaged items from the homes following a Facebook plea.

The charity St John Scotland has revealed how one of its patient transport vehicles was parked in flood-hit Invergowrie in Perth and Kinross and was found 'totally submerged' on Friday morning - but no one was inside:

Dave Throup, the popular former Environment Agency area manager, has said the rain tomorrow will be 'where it's least needed'.

A search is continuing today for a man reported missing early on Friday, who is said to have been trapped in a vehicle in floodwater in Marykirk, Aberdeenshire.

A man from Kilbride in South Lanarkshire has spotted a lone seal swimming in the River Clyde, seemingly having been swept in by Storm Babet.

Ross McCully, 31, of Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, was walking along the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow on Saturday when he saw the seal bobbing on the surface.

Believing the seal may have been looking for calmer waters due to intense flooding in northern Scotland, Mr McCully filmed a video which shows the seal’s head bobbing on the surface of the river, while its body is submerged underwater.

The seal can be seen looking to its left, seemingly unsure of where to go in the waters, before promptly disappearing underneath. The video then cuts to the seal perched on top of the Clyde’s flood gates, while Mr McCully films from above.

The Met Office issued the yellow warning for rain which could lead to further flooding in the East Midlands, including Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as well as much of Yorkshire including Sheffield, Leeds and York and Humberside.

The new yellow weather warning for rain tomorrow could bring more flooding to parts of the East Midlands and Yorkshire. Here is what the Met Office has said to expect:

• Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
• Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
• There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
• There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
• There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads

The Met Office has released further details of a new yellow weather warning for rain, issued for parts of the East Midlands and Yorkshire tomorrow.

The warning will run from 3am until 4pm tomorrow amid a risk of further flooding for already-saturated areas. More than 50mm (2in) of rain could fall.

The Met Office said: ‘An area of rain, some of which will be heavy, will move north across the region during Tuesday morning.

‘There remains some uncertainty in the extent of the heavier rain, but given the already saturated conditions, where this occurs further impacts from flooding are possible.

‘10-20 mm of rain is expected to fall fairly widely, but a few places could see 30-50mm; these higher totals more likely in Lincolnshire and Humberside.’

The Environment Agency just repeated its warning to people in England to 'take extreme care' given the flood warnings that are still in place.

There are 110 flood warnings and 111 flood alerts active across the country.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has called on the Government to end the 'never-ending cycle' of flooding, following the damage wrought by Storm Babet.

Speaking to broadcasters in Port Talbot today, he said: 'My heart goes out to all those that are affected by this. We have seen the terrible scenes of floods, we know the impact that that has, we know the onward impact that will have on insurance premiums, etc, huge cause of concern for families affected by this.

'This is not the first time, this happens almost every year. We have been saying to the Government for a long time now, you need a proper prevention strategy.

'Yes, we need to clean up, yes, we need to put the help in for the individuals and families affected.

'But, above all else, we need a Government with a strategy, a prevention strategy, to make sure we are not continually in this cycle, this never-ending cycle, that affects people so deeply.'

ScotRail has given an update on disruption following Storm Babet, confirming today that all routes had now opened apart from:

• Inverness - Wick / Thurso: Trains will operate to/from Lairg, buses then run between Lairg and Wick/Thurso
• Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh: Buses operate the full route today

In Ireland, warnings of heavy rainfall are in place across 20 counties, with forecasters urging people to be aware of flooding and dangerous road conditions today.

There are rain warnings in place in six counties until 6pm, with the warning extending into the early hours of tomorrow in the others.

Irish forecaster Met Eireann has warned that the rain will be heavy at times with the chance of thunder, and there is a risk of flooding and difficult travel conditions.

A Status Orange rain warning is in place for counties Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford until 1am on Tuesday. There will be heavy and persistent rain in these counties, with a risk of flooding, dangerous road conditions and poor visibility.

A Status Yellow rain warning is in place for counties Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, and Mayo until 6pm on Monday. A Status Yellow rain warning for counties Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow and Roscommon is in place until 1am tomorrow.

First Minister Humza Yousaf has told a resident of Brechin it will be a 'long road to recovery' from severe flooding that hit the town.

First Minister Humza Yousaf has also been thanking members of the emergency services and Angus Council for their efforts in responding to the flooding caused by Storm Babet.

Residents living on River Street in Brechin were first alerted to the danger of the body of water overtopping local flood defences on Thursday as heavy downpours caused levels to rise rapidly.

In the early hours of Friday, emergency services stepped up efforts to move people out of their properties as water started to spill over the sides of the defences and engulf the street.

Road closures and diversions remain in place following Storm Babet, which are affecting Stagecoach bus services in eastern Scotland today as follows:

• The 21A service from Forfar to Brechin cannot operate due to a road closure
• The 21 can only operate between Forfar and Dundee due to the A90 closure
• The 57 in Perth and Kinross is operating with severe delays due to a diversion via Ruthven
• The 36 in Fife will divert from Auchtermuchty to Newburgh via the A91 and the B937 then the normal route

The Met Office ice warning in Scotland has now finished, having ended at 9am.

But Traffic Scotland has warned motorists that roads remain 'significantly affected' following Storm Babet, which brought major flooding, heavy rain and strong winds:

Scotland’s Justice Secretary Angela Constance said the Scottish Government has to have a 'frank' conversation with vulnerable communities on how Scotland prepares for events such as Storm Babet.

She told BBC's Good Morning Scotland: ‘We do have to have some frank conversations with government and our communities because, with the best will in the world, the best flood defences will not give 100 per cent protection 100 per cent of the time.

‘What we've seen with Babet is, over two days, two months' worth of rainfall, which is exceptional, and the impact of that will be with communities for some time.

‘Of course there's been some really tragic consequences of the storm and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected.’

Some people living in Brechin could be permanently out of their homes following massive flooding caused by Storm Babet, a local councillor has said.

Conservative councillor Gavin Nicol, who represents the Brechin and Edzell Ward on Angus Council, also called for more funding from the Scottish Government.

Mr Nicol told BBC Radio Scotland this morning: 'I can tell you the repercussions of the flooding will take months and years to resolve.

'Angus Council, unfortunately, does not have the resources to do the job, it needs to to protect the residents.

'We really need finance from the Scottish Government in order to protect our residents, to rehome them. Some will be out for months, if not permanently.'

A Church of England primary school in a village just outside Retford in Nottinghamshire has been devastated by flooding following Storm Babet.

The Parents, Teachers and Friends Association at North Wheatley Primary School told of the 'substantial damage', and a JustGiving crowdfunder has been set up.

In Retford, Nottinghamshire, residents in 500 homes were advised to evacuate yesterday as water levels on the River Idle hit a record 2.56m at lunchtime.

Communities have started a multi-million-pound clean-up after Storm Babet left four people dead and destroyed hundreds of homes.

In Angus and Aberdeenshire, the areas worst hit by the storm, teams yesterday began assessing the level of damage.

The heartbroken son of a Storm Babet victim found his elderly disabled mother's lifeless body floating in the floodwaters at her waterlogged home.

A visibly shaken Paul Gilbert told how he discovered 83-year-old Maureen Gilbert dead on the bottom floor of her flooded home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

The Met Office has just revealed temperatures fell to -4.6C (23.7F) at Braemar in Aberdeenshire overnight, where an ice warning has been in place for Scotland.

A grandmother who died after being swept away in a river amid the chaos caused by Storm Babet was last night named by police.

Wendy Taylor, 57, was swept into the river at Water of Lee, in Glen Esk, north of Brechin, Angus, at around 1.45pm on Thursday.

The Met Office has a yellow ice warning in force across parts of Scotland and the far north of England until 9am this morning. Here is what to expect:

Severe flood warnings are in place for more than 100 areas across the UK, as Britons continue to battle with the aftermath of deadly Storm Babet.

Around 1,250 homes across England have been flooded following the onslaught of strong gales and heavy showers, that saw more than a month and a half's worth of rain fall in days.

Most of Transport for London's network is operating smoothly this morning, with no problems due to the weather or flooding. The only issues reported are as follows:

• London Trams: No service until Sunday between East Croydon and Beckenham Junction / Elmers End / New Addington. Buses operate.
• Chancery Lane and Lancaster Gate stations closed due to lack of staff

Northern has also warned of ‘residual disruption’ on some routes today. Problems between Sheffield and Nottingham are expected until the end of today.

Severe weather between the stations means trains are only able to run between Alfreton and Sheffield. Northern customers are therefore advised ‘not to travel’.

CrossCountry has also warned of some 'residual disruption' on its route following Storm Babet, with the following service alterations in place today:

• Bristol Temple Meads – Plymouth: An hourly train service is in operation between Bristol Temple Meads and Plymouth.
• Birmingham New Street - Cardiff Central: An hourly train service is in operation between Birmingham New Street and Cardiff Central.
• Birmingham New Street - Bristol Temple Meads: A limited train service is operating between Birmingham New Street and Bristol Temple Meads.

It said services are running normally between Manchester Piccadilly and Reading / Bournemouth; also between Birmingham New Street and Leicester / Cambridge / Stansted Airport.

Most routes in Scotland have reopened following severe disruption caused by Storm Babet, although residual disruption is still expected to these services today.

Almost all ScotRail routes will be open today, and a normal service will resume except for the following:

• Early morning Fife trains - The first trains to run in Fife will be the 06:19 Perth To Edinburgh via Kirkcaldy and the 06:58 Glenrothes to Edinburgh via Cowdenbeath.
• The line between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh will be closed
• Services between Inverness and Wick / Thurso will start / terminate at Lairg
• Buses will replace trains between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh and between Lairg and Wick / Thurso.

The Environment Agency has warned there could be more flooding in the coming days after Storm Babet swept across Britain.

Around 1,250 properties in England have been flooded and an estimated 30,000 properties have been protected, the EA said.

The agency added that more flood warnings are expected for some of the worst affected areas into next week - despite severe flood warnings, meaning risk of death or serious injury, being lifted.

The EA said: 'River flooding will continue into Wednesday along the River Severn. Further flooding is possible from rivers and surface water on Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of England due to further heavy rain.'

First Minister Humza Yousaf will visit Brechin today to see where the River South Esk burst its banks and flooded dozens of homes last week during Storm Babet.

Residents living on River Street were first alerted to the danger of the body of water overtopping local flood defences on Thursday as heavy downpours caused levels to rise rapidly.

In the early hours of Friday, emergency services stepped up efforts to move people out of their properties as water started to spill over the sides of the defences and engulf the street.

Respite centres were set up in the town for individuals and families forced to leave their homes and residents only started returning in large numbers yesterday to assess the damage done.

Mr Yousaf is expected to meet residents impacted by the flooding during his visit today and thank volunteers, local authority staff and emergency service personnel who played a part in the evacuation.

It's a chilly start to the week today with some icy patches in Scotland - but plenty of sunshine is expected later on.

The Environment Agency has issued 116 flood warnings and 123 flood alerts today.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has one warning and one alert out.

Natural Resources Wales has imposed one flood warning and six alerts.

That makes it a total of 118 flood warnings and 130 flood alerts in Britain today.

There is only one Met Office weather warning now in place for Britain.

This is an ice warning for most of Scotland that began at 9pm last night and runs until 9am this morning.
