The Brave Gladiators kickstart their community wellness initiative in Shandumbala, Windhoek on Saturday as they advocate for healthy living.
The wellness day dubbed ‘Healthy Habits = Healthy Body’ will take place at the City One Circle in the vicinity of the Hakahana Service Station.
Speaking to Desert FM this week, Brave Gladiators captain Lovisa Mulunga said the idea stems from seeing residents engaging in unproductive social activities.
“We thought why not initiate something that will educate our community members to practise healthy lifestyles and habits,” Mulunga
“We came up with the idea to host a wellness day in Katutura because we know people from Katutura who are exposed to many other things.”
The Brave Gladiators captain said the preoccupation with social ills generally stems from limited recreational activities for the youth.
“The girls were happy about the idea because it is something that will benefit the community,” she said.
Participants are urged to dress in sport wear or any comfortable loose clothing as the wellness day activities include a 2km run, yoga session, hoola hoops, financial education session, blood pressure checkup, sugar level checks, psychologist talks, 30 seconds games and many more activities.
The wellness day kicks off at 08h00 to 13h00 and all residents in the vicinity of Oshandumbala are cordially invited to attend.
Mulunga said the community members were keen on the idea following the player’s door to door visits where they sold the idea.
“We visited the houses to just sort of create awareness of the idea and the event coming up. Yes, we did get a lot of positive feedback and we are now busy with preparation for the event,” Mulunga said.
“It was difficult to get corporate sponsors on board even though we wrote letters to some including the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service. We are still awaiting their responses.”
However, Mulunga said they did get assistance from individual Samaritans and the Namibia Football Association (NFA).
She added that it will not be a once-off event and that the plan is to spread it out over the remainder of the year.
“We want to have it in different locations. We want to serve our communities, we care about our communities and we will continue with this initiative as a social responsibility of the Brave Gladiators’ players and the technical team staff,” Mulunga said.
