Sangster International Airport’s runway extension: A boon for Jamaica’s aviation sector

In a significant stride for Jamaica’s aviation domain, the extension of the Sangster International Airport (SIA) runway is celebrated as a pivotal achievement. 

This development not only bolsters safety and security measures but also promises to invigorate tourism and trade by enticing more flights, and passengers, and increasing cargo flows.

Enhancing infrastructure

Part of a comprehensive $70 million upgrading initiative at the Montego Bay-based airport, the runway extension stands out as a cornerstone.

This expansion elevates the takeoff range from 2662 meters to an impressive 3060 meters, marking a substantial improvement in operational capabilities.

Facilitating growth

Hon. Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport, lauded the significance of this development.

In his address, delivered by Mark Hart, Chairman of the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ), Vaz highlighted the enhanced capacity of SIA to accommodate larger aircraft and increased flight frequencies.

Vital role in tourism

SIA’s pivotal role in facilitating the transit of over 85 per cent of tourist arrivals to the island underscores its indispensability in Jamaica’s tourism landscape. 

With over 5.2 million passengers served in 2023 alone, the airport emerges as a linchpin supporting the tourism and transport sectors.

Driving economic growth

The runway extension, complemented by infrastructure enhancements and coastal restoration initiatives, is poised to fortify Jamaica’s standing and propel economic growth, particularly in the resort town of Montego Bay.

A regional jewel: Praising SIA’s excellence

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, extols SIA as a beacon of excellence in the Caribbean. 

Emphasizing its capacity to accommodate long-haul flights, Chang underscored its role in cementing Montego Bay’s status as a tourism hub.

Shane Munroe, Chief Executive Officer of MBJ Airports Limited, characterized the runway extension as a transformative initiative.

By adhering to stringent international aviation standards, Munroe stressed the potential for growth in international flights, facilitated by accommodating larger aircraft and ensuring safety protocols.

Highlighting the inclusive nature of the project, Munroe underscored the involvement of local engineers, contractors, and materials.
