New on Netflix October 1: Seinfeld
Seinfeld is certainly the ‘master of this domain,’ now! After a surprise announcement last month, the hit comedy series Seinfeld is new on Netflix this weekend. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld’s legendary comedy follows four single friends — comic Seinfeld, bumbling George Costanza (Jason Alexander), frustrated businesswoman Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and eccentric neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) — as they deal with the absurdities that make up life in New York City. This late-’80s to late-’90s television masterpiece was the birthplace for iconic pop culture references like Festivus, “yada yada,” the close-talker and many more, making Seinfeld an uncontested cornerstone in our history. This author cannot wait to watch the younger generations — or anyone who has not seen the show yet, for that matter — to discover and fall in love with Seinfeld, now on Netflix.
New on Netflix October 1: Maid
Also new on Netflix this weekend is Maid, a heartbreaking limited series about one woman’s life spent working to escape the inescapable grip of poverty in America. Based on the best-selling Stephanie Land memoir of the same name, the drama series tells the story of Alex (Margaret Qualley): an aspiring writer who, after fleeing an abusive relationship, winds up working as a maid to support her daughter and provide her a better future. As fellow Decider Meghan O’Keefe says in her review, viewers have never seen something legitimately gritty until they have watched Maid. Emotional, grueling and raw to the very core, Maid is a drama piece that you must watch this weekend.
New on Amazon Prime Video October 1: Black As Night
Welcoming in the official Halloween season on Amazon Prime Video this weekend is a brand-new film in the Welcome to the Blumhouse film series: Black As Night. As a member of our fall streaming movie preview lineup, this latest installment in the anthology thriller-horror series follows an insecure teenage girl as she finds confidence through hunting vampires in New Orleans with the help of her friends. A little Buffy-esque, don’t you think? But perhaps that is where the similarities end because Blumhouse films tend to be darker and more twisted than that. New on HBO Max October 1: The Many Saints of Newark
Sopranos fans, rejoice! After much anticipation, The Many Saints of Newark is finally out in theaters and is new on HBO Max this weekend. Sopranos writers David Chase and Lawrence Konner have come together to give the public the origin story they have always needed: the story of how one impressionable teenager named Antonio Soprano living in 1960s Newark, New Jersey turned into the indomitable mob boss we knew and loved. Michael Gandolfini stars as the young Tony, a role that was originated by his late, great father, making The Many Saints of Newark not only a cinematic draw but a poignant and perhaps heartfelt one as well.
