WASHINGTON, August 8 -- While the world's media report of Russian attacks on Georgia, Russia's main wire service, RIA Novosti is characterizing the conflict as Russian self-defense against Georgia's attacks on Russian nationals in breakaway province South Ossetia. Russian jets attacked Georgia positions today in what Georgia officials declare as open warfare against the Georgian government.

The media controlled by the Kremlin quotes Russian President Dmitry Medvedev as saying "Russia will punish those guilty of killing Russian nationals. Georgian troops in fact staged an act of aggression."
