WRALSportsFan journalist Joe Giglio, who co-hosts The OG with Joe Ovies on 99.9 The Fan, is sharing a message this Thanksgiving that doesn’t have anything to do with sports, but with family instead.

Giglio’s sons, James, 16, and Jackson, 13, were injured in a crash on Oct. 18. The teens were leaving a birthday party in the backseat of a friend’s car. Both had to undergo emergency surgery but, since they were wearing their seatbelts, survived.

The Giglio family worked together with the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program to produce two public safety announcements about the importance of buckling up ahead of the busiest travel week of the year.

“I’m here today because I wore my seatbelt in the backseat,” Jackson says in one video.

“As a parent, you always want your kids to listen to you, but they always don’t,” Giglio said. “This one time, I really was glad they were (listening).”

Nearly half of all drivers and passengers involved in fatal car crashes were not wearing a seat belt at the time, according to the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

You can listen to The OG with Ovies and Giglio weekdays from 3 until 6 p.m. on 99.9 The Fan.
